I suffered from panic attacks that eventually started occurring while I was asleep. Find out how I dealt with them and eventually found a cure.

If you’ve experienced panic attacks while asleep, you’re not alone. It is estimated that up to 50% of panic disorder sufferers experience panic attacks while asleep.

When I first started having panic attacks, they only affected me during the day. I started feeling like my heart was skipping a beat or that it was beating erratically.

Since I’ve had a heart murmur since I was a kid, I found this perceived new behavior of my heart to be rather troublesome. That concern started a spiral of fear that ended me up in the doctor’s office. The doctor referred me to a specialist, and next thing I new, my heart was being monitored throughout the day by a special device.

A diagnosis, but no cure yet

Like most people, it turned out that I didn’t have a heart problem at all. The doctor said it appeared I was under severe stress, and that was causing panic attacks. He suggested I remove the source of stress in my life and learn to deal with stress better.

I was relieved that I didn’t have a heart problem, but that didn’t end my panic attacks. In fact, they actually got a little worse after that. I had recently left my stable job to become an entrepreneur, which was one of the scariest and stressful things I’ve ever done. As that reality set in, I started to experience panic attacks while I was sleeping as well.

Waiting it out

For me, resolving my panic disorder came down to waiting it out, and gradually becoming comfortable with my situation.

I also learned not to let the spiral of panic attacks happen so easily. It’s all about not becoming so worried about a panic attack occuring that you actually cause another one yourself.

I don’t recall when the panic attacks stopped exactly, but I know there were quite a few months where I had to deal with it.

The sleep panic attacks were the worst, because they kept me up at night and led to insomnia and other problems. I truly feel sorry for anyone who is going through that right now.

A much faster solution

Looking back on it, I’m not sure why I didn’t look for help or resources to help me deal with the panic attacks. It was probably a combination of being to busy with my new business, and being a little ashamed of being a guy with panic attacks. Either way, I wish I had looked for a solution.

After clearing up my problem, I became aware of some techniques out there than can help you control and cure panic attacks. If you’re suffering now, don’t be like me and try to just wait it out. Relief could be just days or weeks away.

One of the most startling, disruptive and scary forms of panic disorder is when you experience panic attacks while sleeping.

Waking up in the middle of the night or early morning from a dead sleep with your heart pounding is awful. It can keep you awake the rest of the night just fearful that another panic attack might happen.

The good news is, panic attacks while sleeping are very rarely physically harmful.

You may feel like your heart has skipped a beat or that you stopped breathing, but that’s actually not very likely. That doesn’t change the fact that they leave you in sheer terror for minutes or hours after an attack happens.

All that fear and worry about the panic attacks (and loss of sleep) can actually end up causing related physical problems, like headaches and sore muscles.

There are natural treatments for panic attacks that can relieve the symptoms of panic attacks while sleeping. Read more about the Panic Away system for relieving panic attacks.

Panic Attacks While Sleeping are Symptoms of Daytime Stress

When you experience a panic attack during sleep, remember that the event is actually a symptom of a build up of stress and anxiety during the day. Imbalances in your life cause the symptom of a panic attack, but panic attacks are not a condition.

If panic attacks have started occurring while you sleep, your stress and anxiety levels are at unhealthy levels, and you might not even be aware of the source of all that stress. Big life changes, conflict with a friend or family member and problems at work are all common causes of stress or anxiety.

Once panic attacks start happening one attack tends to lead to another because you become afraid that another is going to happen. It’s a vicious cycle. The only ways out of that cycle are to learn to control your panic attack symptoms, remove the source of stress that is causing them or to start taking a medication or seeking professional medical help.

Panic Attacks and other Sleep Disorders

Panic attacks while sleeping can often be associated with or confused with other sleep disorders. Panic attacks themselves can either cause or be caused by insomnia. Sleep apnea is also commonly mistaken for panic attacks, but anxiety usually isn’t associated with sleep apnea.

Searching For Relief

Of the three ways to relieve your panic attack symptoms (control the attacks, remove the stress or seem medical help), removing the stress in your life should be your long-term goal. Stress is harmful to your health in more ways than just by causing panic attacks.

But for most of us, we can’t simply turn off stress right away. If you’re going through big life changes, it can take months to remove enough of the stress to fully eliminate panic attacks.

Until you can relieve that stress, you can actually learn to control your panic attacks and eliminate them naturally. There are methods you can learn such as Panic Away which can help you find relief in a matter of days.
